Why SERVPRO Tests Various Things During Water Cleanup Jobs In Lakeland Residences

Many of our customers throughout Lakeland ask questions about the work we do in their homes. They can easily see the 'what' and 'how' but the 'why' of many aspects of our methods remains mysterious. We welcome questions about this, as well as tips on how to prevent future situations that can cause their property to deteriorate.

One of these questions is about why SERVPRO tests random things when we arrive to perform water cleanup services in their Lakeland home. They want to know why we test things that never became wet, just like we test obviously affected items.

We test different things that the lost water did not come into contact with because we need to know what is the acceptable amount of moisture content for that type of item. Without this information, we might over-dry the item, or attempt to do so, which wastes resources and time. It can also lead to damage that previously did not exist, and we want to avoid doing that.

Some things change in the amount of moisture content they contain over time. Older items made of wood, such as memorabilia from your past vacations, might contain less moisture than they do now. However, newer ones contain more, and over-drying them can cause them to crack. This is not such an important thing when handling affected textiles such as stuffed toys, but where changes in the amount of moisture content can cause damage, we want to ensure that our work enhances your home, and does nothing to damage it or its contents.

Our teams know how important testing is to determine the proper amount of moisture content for different items, and we learn this during our training sessions. During training, we also learn how to check for the presence of lost water with our infrared imaging cameras. This knowledge helps us find hidden water that might otherwise remain and become a problem.

Allowing pockets of hidden water to remain while we attempt to dry out your home and get all of the water cleaned up causes our drying equipment to work harder to extract the water vapor from the air. Instead, locating it and extracting it, cleaning the area and then manually drying surfaces, helps keep the rate of evaporation steady and lets our equipment do the job more efficiently.
